The End of the True-False Organic Yogurt

For years, Danone® has marketed yoghurt which it has widely publicized as “BIO” (organic) and Danone’s famous “Bio” is one of the company’s best selling products.

The problem is that Danone’s “Bio” yoghurt is as organic as the Mars® and Kinder® bar.

For years organic farming professionals, who are truly organic precisely because they have done what is needed to respect the draconian standards set for this category of products, have struggled to put a stop to what they deem unfair competition and a means swindling of consumers. All their efforts have been in vain since in this legal battle the French courts have been consistently indulgent, if not careless.

Now, thanks to the European Union, organic producers have finally won this cause for the right to honest marketing practices.

In effect, European Community regulation n°2029/81 stipulates that the marketing of foodstuffs which are not organically produced will no longer be authorized as of July 1st 2006.

In France, Danone’s “Bio” will be taken off the market as of November 2005 and replaced by a new product called “Activia”.
